This week I watched a ted talk which is a online way of spreading ideas of what others thinks and or what they found that focuses on why we should quit social media. The main ideas of this talk is that social media has a lot of effects on you. One idea that I found interesting was social media can lead to you having a lot of problems with your brain and sleeping habits. I thought it was interesting because you can get addicted to using your phone 24/7.

It made me wonder what what kinds of effects social media has on you, so I looked up some more information about the idea.

Facts and reasons.

On the website cool materials,  I found more information about reasons we should quit social media and the different effects it has on you. One piece of information I found was that it can and might cause depression for some people. This information supported the information in the original text.

According to cool materials social media can lead to eating disorders, it will make you dumber, could ruin relationships, GPS mapping makes you on easy target, causes depression, narcissism, messes up your work flow. It can cause depression because there is so much negative talk and post on social media that can put a lot on out body's.

There was a recent study done at the University of Pittsburgh on about 1,787 Americans with social media and depression.  Over a quarter of the people who were surveyed/ studied had a "high' indication of depression. You would be shocked how it feels good to be unplugged from social media.

The Dangers Of Social Media

Social media such as Facebook, and YouTube collects you data and uses the information you search and give it to find videos and pictures that try to keep you on their site longer and make it more engaging. They do this because they try to get you on their site longer so they can collect and sell more information. Another damage of social media has on us is their different dings sounds when someone texts you, comments on your post, or even when you get a snap. When you constantly check you phone to see if you have a message or a snap every  5 minutes you lose connection of whats going on in the real world. Cal Newport from the ted talk states that "That is the desired us case of these products
: is that you use it in an addictive fashion because that maximizes the profit that can be extracted from your attention and data. So it's not a fundamental technology, it's just a source of entertainment, one among many, and it's somewhat unsavory if you look a little bit closer".

Why I quit social media

Over the past couple of years I had social media, I used to have Instagram, twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Tiktok. But after a while of having theses I started to realize that I kept commenting and liking stuff that I shouldn't have been saying, I've started to hate who I was turning into. I made the decision and deleted Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok. I choose to do this to try and fix who I was becoming to be before it got to bad that I couldn't stop, I loved the choice that I had made. So, now i am left with Facebook, and Snapchat to keep in touch with family, friends, and my softball team. I can see what they are up to and they can see what I am up to which can help by seeing if everything is ok with them. My hope is after reading this you try/ consider quitting social media at least for a day and see how it feels.

  1. Jordyn, what made you keep the forms of social media that you did? How do you see those as different from the other kinds of social media you cut out?

You mention a lot of negative effects of social media. It would be interesting to learn a bit more about the cause and effect relationship abut one of those issues.
